or an accurate comparison over several years, be sure test conditions are as similar as possible. Measure at the same time of year to minimize the effect of seasonal characteristics. If the pump output is lower and specific capacity is the same or higher the pump's performance has declined and the pump may need repair. If the specific capacity is lower, the well may need rehabilitation.

Declining specific capacity indicates that the well is drawing water from the aquifer less efficiently. A dramatic drop (30% to 40%) indicates a problem that should be addressed very soon. When a new well starts yielding water, record its specific capacity and plan to rehabilitate when specific capacity approaches 60% of this reading.

Clues to well and pump problems are often found outside regular tests of specific capacity. Check for sand or slime in tanks or water lines, a buildup of scale or slime on pumps and pipes. Check the depth of the well. Physical debris in the well can drastically decrease production. Always keep regular, accurate records. These simple precautions can save a lot of trouble down the line.
